Getting married and want to prepare for a better future?
Let's start… from when we were children!
Have you heard about "Savings for Every Child"?

At our shop we meet couples about to get married, starting to plan together - wedding, home, maybe an apartment. A question that comes up often is: "Where do we start?"

A small reminder before anything else: since 2017, the State of Israel deposits a small monthly amount into a personal savings account for every child. If you haven't withdrawn it yet - the savings is in your name and the money is there.

The Story in Brief - Savings for Every Child

Since 2017, the National Insurance Institute (Bituach Leumi) deposits a small monthly amount into a private savings account in the name of every child entitled to child allowance - until they reach age 18. In addition, parents may add the same amount from the child allowance to double the savings.

Parameter2026 Value
Bituach Leumi deposit₪58 / month
Parent deposit (optional)+₪58 → ₪116/month
Deposit durationFrom birth to age 18
Bonus at age 18₪582
Additional bonus at age 21 (if not withdrawn)+₪582

At age 21 the money becomes available for withdrawal - with no conditions. The accumulated amount typically ranges between ₪50,000 and ₪70,000 per person, depending on returns and the chosen investment track.

🎁 For a couple who haven't touched the savings - the gross accumulated amount is estimated together at roughly ₪100,000 to ₪140,000. Before withdrawal, a 25% capital gains tax applies to the real (inflation-adjusted) gains only (the principal deposited by the state is not taxed). The net amount in hand is usually significantly more than 90% of the gross - depending on inflation and actual returns.

Don't know where your savings is?

Withdraw Now, or Keep Saving?

There are two main approaches, both legitimate. The difference is mainly what happens to the money over time.

Option A - Withdraw now

The money lands in your bank account within a few days, and you can use it for any purpose - wedding, rented apartment, car, travel. Note: a 25% capital gains tax on the real gains is deducted (after offsetting inflation), regardless of the chosen investment track. The principal itself is not taxed.

Option B - Leave the money in the fund

The money continues to grow in an investment provident fund (kupat gemel le-hashka'ah). A future withdrawal will be subject to the same 25% tax on new real gains. Worth knowing: if you choose to withdraw only after age 60, and as a monthly annuity - there's a capital gains tax exemption on everything accumulated. (This is the eligibility age for the investment-provident-fund exemption - not necessarily the official retirement age.)

Option C - Leave it and choose a track that suits you 🏆

After age 21, the money stays in an investment provident fund and you can choose your investment track and update it at any time. Switching tracks within the same fund is not a taxable event, and neither is transferring between different fund managers.

If you do nothing - the existing track continues automatically, and the Bituach Leumi and parent deposits stop. Choosing a track is a right, not an obligation.

💸 Watch the management fees: until age 21, Bituach Leumi pays the management fees in full (the saver pays nothing). From age 21 onwards, fees are deducted from the savings at a rate anchored in the "Savings for Every Child" regulation (currently around 0.20%–0.23% per year - significantly lower than a regular investment provident fund). If you transfer the money to a different investment provident fund, you may lose this regulated low-fee tier and fees can rise - worth comparing on Gemel-Net before deciding.
⚠️ A distinction before age 21: if the savings is held in an investment provident fund - you can transfer to another fund at any time, and switch tracks too. If the savings is held at a bank - you can't move it to another bank and can't transfer the already-deposited amounts to a provident fund. As of January 1, 2025, you can redirect new deposits to an investment provident fund (the existing balance at the bank stays there). After age 21, when the money becomes a regular investment provident fund in the saver's name, transfers are open between all fund managers.

Each fund offers several tracks - from conservative bonds to all-equity. The right track depends on how long until you need the money and your tolerance for fluctuations.

Guiding principle: investing is a long-term game. Conservative rules of thumb - "simplest, lowest-cost, least-touching" - usually beat complicated strategies.

3 rules of thumb experts agree on

  1. "Buy the whole market and forget" - broad index-tracking funds (global) are less risky than betting on a single stock or sector.
  2. Long horizon = ability to weather volatility - if the money isn't needed within 5+ years, market swings are short-term noise, not real risk. The shorter the horizon, the more conservative the track should be.
  3. Management fees matter more than you'd think - a 0.5% difference over 30 years = a difference of hundreds of thousands of shekels. Compare fees before deciding where the money sits.
🔍 How to compare? The official Gemel-Net portal of the Capital Market Authority lets you compare returns, fees, and tracks across every fund in Israel - with no advertising or commercial bias.

Calculator: how much will your money be worth?

A small exercise. Suppose you have ₪60,000 today. Change the parameters and see what happens.

Option A - Retirer maintenant

The Math - what small actions over time really do

This is not a recommendation - more of a "if you'd like to grasp the order of magnitude" before consulting a professional. The numbers below come from the calculator above (7% net return, no specific inflation):

Time and consistency matter more than the monthly amount. Try the calculator - change "Additional monthly deposit" and "Savings duration" and see the impact.

Practical checklist

If you want to begin, here are a few simple steps:

  1. Request a status report from the fund - where is the money, in which track, and what are the fees.
  2. Compare on Gemel-Net - the official portal lets you compare returns and fees across every fund in Israel, without commercial content.
  3. Think about your time horizon - when do you want to use the money? In two, five, or twenty years? It affects the right track.
  4. Switch tracks or transfer if needed - tax-free. An online form at the new fund, about 10 business days, no fee.
  5. Annual reminder - once a year worth checking again, as conditions and tracks evolve.
  6. Self-employed? Worth checking if a study fund (keren hishtalmut) fits - it offers a significant tax benefit.
  7. Independent pension advice - before a significant decision, an hour with a licensed advisor can help.

This savings can be a starting point.

Some couples we meet at the shop tell us that the ring is only the beginning of what they're building together. If that's your direction too - this savings can be part of it.

Liste de contrôle pratique

Si vous voulez commencer, voici quelques étapes simples :
